Describing Signing

Test category:

3. Test for hearing adult and child learners of sign language as a second language

Purposes:

Assess the level of skills of people proficient in or learning a sign language with a view to targeted improvement of learning, post-course testing, selection for employment, etc. Assess level of functional communicative signing skills of samples of users selected for sociolinguistic, educational and demographic research.

Screening or deeper investigation:

Screening and deeper investigation related to above purposes.

Target Age Groups:

Late childhood to adult.

Content:

Categories of functional use of sign language.

Background:

Developed to meet need for assessment of signing skills for classes and employment, research, etc.

Test development and standardisation:

Developed in consultation with native signers. ”Standardisation” not applicable to this kind of test.

Administration:

Easy categories for sign use coded while observing subjects signing (preferably videotaped conversation)

Scoring: No ”Score”; a ”Profile” of functional sign use is obtained.

Time: 30 minutes

Cost: Packet of 25 copies = AUD25; 50 copies = AUD50; single copy = AUD10 (plus 10% GST in Australia only; airmail postage extra – please enquire)

Strengths and Weaknesses:

Strength is speed of use and good coverage of functional use of signing. Weakness is lack of detail of actual signs (though this is not its purpose).
